Brief of FSSAI License

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is in charge of issuing food permits to Food Business Operators in India. It is the highest authority established by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, and it is responsible for establishing standards for the sale, packaging, and storage of food in India. It was also established under the 2006 Food Safety and Standards Act.

Similarly, all proprietary food operations must register with the FSSAI and get a licence. Novel foods, foods for particular dietary use, foods for special medical uses, functional foods, nutraceuticals, health supplements, and other articles of food that the central government may notify in this regard are not considered proprietary food.

The Basic FSSAI Registration is required for food business operators such as manufacturers, merchants, and food store owners. Furthermore, depending on the size or scale of the food industry, there are two categories of food licences: FSSAI License and Basic FSSAI Registration.

Who Needs to Register with the FSSAI?

  • Procurement

What Are the Consequences of Failing to Register for a Basic Food License?

A Basic FSSAI Registration is required for all food-related businesses. The following are the implications of not having a valid food license:-

  • An FFSAI logo can help your business boost the reputation of the food it sells, distributes, or stores. However, you will not be permitted to use the FSSAI Logo on your food items unless you have a valid registration.
  • It's possible that getting loans for your food business could be challenging. This is because most investors, banks, and lenders favour borrowers who have a certificate over those who do not have an FSSAI licence when giving loans.
  • Failure to obtain a suitable FSSAI License may result in the loss of opportunity to apply for government tenders or events, among other things.
  • You're dealing with a lack of trust from your target market.
  • You may also face a penalty of up to five lakh rupees or a six-month jail sentence if you operate a food business without a legal certificate of registration.
